The I-5590/6590 is a universal controller for removable media devices for the IBM Mainframe and Midrange Systems. The I-5590/6590 provides full backward compatibility for 9-track tape, 18-track tape and 36 track tape cartridges. The I-5590/6590 replaces IBM mainframe tape Models 3420, 3422, 3480, and 3490, both drives and controllers including the 3803. Host connectivity is provided over ESCON or Block Multiplex Channels (BMC) and may be mixed on the same unit. The system is supported under IBM z/OS, MVS, VM, VSE, AS/400, and RS6000. Other supported technologies include STK 9840, DLT, AIT, IBM 3570, LTO, DVD and Optical Disk.

The Virtual Storage System provides centralized management for local and remote tape resources across all system platforms and enables an enterprise wide data management and security strategy for backup and archiving. Supported operating systems include OS/390, VM/VSE, BS2000, UNIX, AIX, LINUX, Solaris and Windows. Connectivity includes ESCON, Bus & Tag, TCP/IP, ATM, and Fibre. Customers may select from 4 to 256 Virtual Tape Drives, up to 44TB of storage, and 1 TB of cache. Emulations provided are 3422, 3480 and 3490.
